Millstaetter See lies embedded in the mountains of the Nockberge Natural Park, Millstaetter Alp, Tschiernock, Goldeck and Mirnock.

A typical characteristic of the Millstaetter See is the terrace-shaped topography, the lake being situated at an altitude of 600 m, the high plateau at 900 m and Millstätter Alp at 2,000 m.
